This lesson will be using the book "I Am Thankful" by Sheri Wall. This lesson will be used in November around Thanksgiving.
TEACHING AND LEARNING STANDARDS-

RL.3.3- Describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

RI.3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
RI.3.2- Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
LEARNING EXPERIENCE-
- Ask questions to the students before reading the book "I Am Thankful"
- Read the book "I Am Thankful"
- Give students activity sheet and have the students complete the sheet at home https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-I-Am-Thankful-For-Turkey-Printable-Worksheets-407504
- Have the students bring the completed activity sheet back to class
- Allow the students to use the SmartBoard to write one thing they put on there activity sheet that they are thankful for.
- Split students into groups and allow them to share what they are thankful for in each group. Then have them explain why they think they should be thankful for these things.
- Have them come back together as a group and ask them more questions about why we need to be thankful for everything.
INTERACTIVITY-
Reading the book "I Am Thankful" and using the activity sheet allows the students to read about why the characters in this book are thankful for what they have and also allows the students to think for themselves about why they are thankful for their things in life.
CRITICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS-
Questions and sample answers before reading the book-
1. After seeing the cover page and reading the title what do you think this story is about?
-"I think the story is about a boy telling people what he is thankful for"
2. Can you predict what the characters will be thankful for?
- "I think they will be thankful for their family"
Questions and sample answers after reading the book-
1. After reading the book are there any comparisons as to what you thought they were thankful for and what they were actually thankful for?
- "My thought about them being thankful for their family is the same"
2. Can you tell me why we should be thankful?
- "We should be thankful because it's the right thing to do"
BK-12 STUDENT MEDIA CREATION-
Reading the book for this lesson allows the students to think about what they are thankful for. The students will also be given an activity sheet with a turkey on it that has lines in the feathers to allow them to write what they are thankful for.
