Higher Order Thinking Questions:
Can you predict what will happen in this story?
Before we read this book, do you think it will be a good idea to give the mouse a cookie?
What is the difference between "cause" and "effect"?
After reading the book, do you believe it was a good or bad idea to give the mouse a cookie?
Student Sample Responses:
"The mouse will want a cookie, and he will get one"
"I think it will be a good idea to give the mouse a cookie because he's probably hungry" or "I think it will be a bad idea to give the mouse a cookie because a mouse doesn't eat cookies"
"Cause is something that you do, and effect is what happens after you do something"
"Yes because he got everything he wanted" or "No because he started wanting more things after he got the cookie"
Teachers Notes:
For my lesson I will be introducing the topic of cause and effect using the storyline/book called "If you give a mouse a cookie". This lesson is for my elementary school kids, and I am trying to help them understand why if you do one thing, it can lead to something else (hence cause and effect).
